More Creative Ways to Produce Privacy In An Open Office Space Environment

As much as the open office space is a preferred design with most of today’s companies, certain office activities still require a bit of privacy… or the opportunity to get loud without causing too much distraction for fellow employees. As a result, both furniture and office space design companies have come up with a variety of creative solutions to create “privacy” without compromising the open-concept design. We’ve covered a few of them in previous blogs — office pods, partial living walls, Everblock®and Tetris® furniture and walls, use and placement of storage cabinets…but here are a couple more options an organization can take into consideration:

  1. The Rotating Office Screens – A similar concept to vertical blinds, the rotating office screen is actually a series of double-panel slats, each of which rotates on its own pointed base plate. Each slat and base unit can easily be oriented into specific formations in relation to the other slat-base units to create an interesting decor within the open office space design while in “open” position. Once a private meeting is required, the same slats can be turned to the “closed” position, instantly creating a semi or fully private meeting area.

  1. Acoustic Office Screens – Not entirely new to the office space design world, acoustic office screen panels are now available in a variety of sizes, colours and shapes to offer flexibility and interesting decor to an ever-changing open office space environment. Each panel is designed to either stand on casters or on its own unique base, so they can be easily positioned to either add a design to a main wannabe-tree-screenwall or create a semi-private space for individual or collaborative activities. In some cases, the panel shapes are irregular but can interlink to make a visually stimulating wall design or collaboration area. In other cases, the walls are stackable or can easily “nest” into one another, allowing for easy storage. What is even more advantageous is the acoustic office screens are made with soft materials designed to absorb sound, so they help lessen sound disturbances in an open office space environment.

The best part about these solutions is that they not only provide a “privacy” option to the open-concept office space design, but they also enhance flexibility within an open office space design.

Office Space Ideas That Take Flexibility to a Whole New Level

everblock-office-deskOK. Do you remember one of my previous blogs stating that flexibility would be key in office space design? Well, there are actually some office space ideas, concepts and materials that take “flexibility” to a whole new level.

Take, for example, the Everblock®. If you were ever a Lego® fanatic or ever dreamed of living or working in a room built of Lego® blocks, your dream could easily become a reality. Inspired by Lego®, Everblocks® are sturdy modular plastic life-sized interlocking blocks that can easily be used to build a wall divider or room whenever needed– but that’s not all. These same blocks can be used to build chairs, desks, sofas, shelving, cabinets….pretty much any furniture your office would need… and your team can be the creative “Masterbuilders” of it all. Talk about flexibility!

How about the sliding inflatable wall that doubles as a lounge bed? That’s right. A glossy transparent inflatable screen resembling a giant form of bubble-wrap is set within a frame on castors to create a great sliding office partition that can easily be moved around to define certain office areas without compromising too much on the open office space concept. This same inflatable screen can slide out of its frame and be laid on the floor to create a lounging area or bed. That’s flexibility.

It’s a white-board! It’s a table! No…It’s a Flip-Top!

whiteboard-fliptopWith the demand for smaller office spaces increasing, the need to choose office furniture that is easily mobile, easily multi-purposed, and easily stored so that it does not take up valuable real estate when not in use is most essential. That is why the flip-top table can be such a valuable furniture investment for smaller office spaces.

What is a flip-top table? In simple terms, it is a table on wheels that, with the flip of a switch, turns or flips its table top position from a horizontal to vertical position. Its simple design allows it to be what most smaller office spaces need:

  1. Multi-purpose – the simple table design of the flip-top table allows it to be used as a desk, or a collaborative work space, or even a casual eating space for employees. Put a few of them together to create a training space or boardroom meeting space.

  2. Easily Mobile – Most Flip-top tables are designed with caster wheels, allowing them to be easily moved (or rolled) to desired locations in the office

  3. Easily stored – When not in use, a simple flip of a switch will cause the top of the table to fold down and tables themselves to be easily “nested” into a corner or storage space.

Flip-top tables are available in a variety of table-top designs, including wood, white and black tops. However, some designers in Europe have taken the flip-top table to another level. They offer the flip-top in a white-board table-top design, thus allowing the flip-top to have an additional use even when in its flipped or nesting state.

Imagine the heightened amount of creativity and innovation that can happen around a white-board flip-top table whether in its horizontal table or vertical nesting state. It is just one more furniture investment that could help “flip” your business into new levels of success.

The New Face of Office Space Storage

From flexible walls to mobile office furniture to meeting pods, everything that defines an office space needs to be “subject to change” in location or look with relatively little to no difficulty, time or expense— or at the very least, be able to serve multiple purposes. Office space storage cabinets are no exception.

Office space storage cabinets for 2017 will not only take on a slightly different look but also serve more than one purpose. In terms of looks, the new standard filing cabinet could be customized to incorporate the colour scheme of the office, and have a glass or wooden top surface. The individual storage areas in a cabinet can be a set of horizontal drawers, vertical cabinet doors or a combination of both, allowing for multiple storage systems to be used in one office space storage unit. For example, the horizontal drawer space would be used for letter, legal or A4 filing, while the vertical cabinet door area would be used to hang up coats and store personal belongings. All sections of the office space storage unit would have secure locking systems to keep all contents safe.

And no longer will they necessarily have to be lined up against a wall—they can be the wall! That’s right! Creatively placed in an open office space design, the new office space storage cabinets can be used as a divider to further define or separate a work space from a meeting space. How clever is that?

With the rising popularity of flex hours and desk sharing, and the more simple contemporary designs of actual office desks, the popularity of storage at an actual desk is on the decline. It only makes sense that file storage cabinet units pick up the slack with their new contemporary design and purpose.

Who says you can’t sleep on the job? Introducing Sleeping Pods

Podtime_3030317bWhat was once considered a reason to permanently relieve a person from their duties if done at work is now slowly being re-looked at by companies as just one more way to promote well-being and increased productivity amongst staff members. I am referring to sleep. And with the introduction of sleeping pods in an office space, staff catching up on lost sleep during their break or lunch hours, will be much more easily facilitated.

sleeppodsGettyWhat are sleeping pods? In short, they are self contained units built for one, and designed for the sole purpose of allowing its user a private place to nap. Similar to office pods, sleeping pods are portable, sound proof, and can either be fully or partially enclosed. Some sleeping pods are even stackable, therefore allowing multiple units to be in an office space without taking up a large amount of its real estate.

Inspired by space and submarine sleeping capsules, sleeping pods at minimum include some form of mattress or bed upon which the user can lay down horizontally and rest. Some sleeping pods, however, can be outfitted with shelving for personal items, a radio, CD or DVD player and/or television to keep the individual entertained while in resting position.

Why introduce the option to sleep at work? According to Global Dean of Research, Ashridge Executive Education, Hult International Business School, Vicki Culpi, “Memory, attention, decision making, creativity and innovative thinking, highly relevant skills in the work environment, have all been shown to be affected by poor sleep, and the effects can appear after only a few nights of poor sleep. In addition, chronic sleep restriction, over longer periods of time, have been linked to diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.” Affording employees the opportunity to “disconnect and recharge” in a sleeping pod, even for just 15 minutes, has shown improvement in all of the above areas as well as promoted an increase in productivity, creativity and innovation amongst staff.

Office Pods– A New Solution to Privacy in an Open Office Space Design

Among the many office space design trends that currently exist, the open office space design has been the one popular design choice spanning several industries to encourage collaboration amongst staff and put all employees on an equal playing…or I should say, working field. But no matter how attractive the open office space design is to today’s organizations, there is always that looming need to create quiet areas or areas of privacy to handle regular business operation tasks such as making client phone calls meetings. Traditional offices closures and conference rooms have been the solutions to date, but a new solution is coming over the office space design horizon that more closely fits with the open office design concept.

Smart Office Chairs Make Sitting a Smarter Choice

Sit-stand desks are not the only thing getting smarter. Now chairs are getting smarter too.

Earlier this year, the news came out that sitting too long during the day can be detrimental to one’s health — it increases the possibility of diseases such as cancer and diabetes, and shortens one’s lifespan. Movement helps one’s health.1 This message became the main reason why sit-stand desks were developed and are now used in various offices today. But office chair developers were not going to take this news sitting down (pardon the pun). Instead, they decided to restore sitting as a smart choice by developing smart office chairs.

How smart are these smart office chairs? Glad you asked.

Smart office chairs come with various features. Some smart office chairs are designed to automatically adjust their height, arm rest, head rest (if applicable) and lumbar sections to best fit each user and promote good sitting posture. These chairs also measure a sitter’s weight and uses this information to calculate and adjust the back of the chair to the optimal recline angle for that user (should the user choose to recline).2 Other chairs are built with sensors that measure a sitter’s posture. If the sitter is sitting poorly, these smart office chairs let the sitter know by either vibrating or “voicing” where the posture needs to be corrected.3

By far, the most interesting smart office chair on the market is one that actually keeps its sitter constantly moving while remaining in the sitting position. Unlike traditional office chair designs, these smart office chairs are made with custom-sized, carbon-fiber shells that wrap around each leg and move fluidly as its sitter moves to either reach for the phone, type on a computer, or lean over to speak to a co-worker. With these smart office chairs, sitters can stretch, twist, lean…even dance in their chair if feeling particularly creative. With all movements, the spine is supported, the body is constantly stimulated, circulation is improved and the back vertebrae are kept lubricated. The added bonus—these particular smart office chairs help the sitter feel good emotionally. Neuroscientists have found that constant stimulation of the body sends positive neuro signals to the brain, resulting in feelings of happiness.4

So, whether you just want to sit correctly, or keep moving while you work, there are smart office chairs out there that will keep you healthy and happy while you work.
